Roundabout Micro-Simulation Capacity Analysis

Client:

City of Sarasota, FL

Background:

The purpose was to develop a Design Traffic Report to assess improvements on US 41 through downtown Sarasota. Geometric roundabout improvements were conceptually approved for the two primary intersections at Gulfstream Avenue and at Fruitville Road as a result of this capacity analysis. These are part of ongoing evaluations to improve overall mobility within the downtown area to integrate pedestrian, bicycle, and transit modes of travel and demonstrating the benefits of multi-modal system improvements versus traditional capacity improvements.

Detailed traffic simulation was undertaken using VISSIM microsimulation software along the two-mile study corridor from 14th Street to Orange Avenue. Recommended multi-modal alternatives have been developed together with a project implementation schedule, project funding schedule, and referenced provisions from the City's Comprehensive Plan Elements that support the recommendations. A total of six roundabouts along the study corridor are anticipated at the following locations:

  • US 41 & 14th Street
  • US 41 & 10th Street
  • US 41 & Fruitville Road
  • US 41 & Gulfstream Boulevard
  • US 41 & Main Street
  • US 41 & Orange Avenue

CASE STUDIES
  • "I am glad to say that the analysis and recommendations Jason provided have been well respected by other technical reviewers from around the Country. Both the City of Sarasota and the Florida DOT have continued to reference this Study. Many of the recommendations are now moving forward to final design and construction. "
