Collier and Lee Counties

Big Data Travel Time Estimates

Client:

Collier and Lee Counties, FL

Background:

ADEAS-Q utilized StreetLightData for a travel-time and origin-destination study in Southwest Florida. The purpose of this effort was to demonstrate that actual travel time data collected from real-time GPS and cellphone location devices can provide a robust and verifiable data source. More importantly, this data published by an independent third party data provider is considered a more appropriate method than simply referencing free search engine web sites from where the data cannot be independently verified. Dr. Collins provided expert witness testimony on this topic accepted in a State of Florida Administrative Hearing in Tallahassee.

This specific task was to identify how many hospitals are accessible in Lee County and Collier County within a 30-minute drivetime service area. StreetLightData archived the anonymous “pings” generated by the location-aware devices, then linked the observed data points to identify trip characteristics like:

  • Trip origin and destination
  • Route traveled
  • Speed
  • Travel-time

The D1RPM was then utilized to perform multiple select zone analyses to evaluate how this service area would change with a new facility proposed in a future year condition.
